As a mother I would be horrified if I caught one of my sons speaking in such a manner about anyone. I used to think girls were above that, but even that's changing. Breaks my heart to know there are still cruel, unthinking brutes walking around even today. But it's great that we still love and adore Rudy and don't remember the names of the people who treated him badly. He left too young but sure made a mark while he was here. : ) TaraTara Lainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15827237576731799626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7718751493806122087.post-33846340839497393242012-03-30T12:56:25.924-07:002012-03-30T12:56:25.924-07:00Thank God that places like San Francisco and West ...Thank God that places like San Francisco and West Hollywood exist. People can be who they are and though not totally without fear of reprisal, they can be comfortable in their own skin. The bullying issue is one of those that made me feel passionate enough to write my first M/M novel three years ago. I explore this phenonmena in every book I write now in some form or another, because I feel that it is important for me to help remind society that ALL people should be included in the definition of 'norm'. I was very young when the Civil Rights movement was underway, and remember almost nothing of it. I have since read up on the history of it and I think the GLBT community faces the same fight today. If there is any way for me to help in the fight, whether it's to write about a drag queen who is out and proud and his closeted macho cowboy lover and his coming out story, I will continue to do so. Well said, Carol!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03279024953860380125noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7718751493806122087.post-43681193114583674472012-03-30T11:38:47.755-07:002012-03-30T11:38:47.755-07:00*sniffs* It certainly is better now, in some ways...*sniffs* It certainly is better now, in some ways, but hatred is always with us. Hatred, as you so aptly point out with the Hesse, is often born of fear of something within ourselves. And of course, fear of what we do not understand.

I love your insights. My sons would never wear a pink or purple shirt to high school.

Sad to have your being judged by a color your wear. There is much pressure for boys to remain "manly" regardless of their orientation. It's too bad that hasn't passed on with the Model T Ford and Prohibition.

Btw, my dad used to get manicures...most manly men who cared about their appearance did and they wore clear polish, too. Put that in your masculine pipe and smoke it "Chicago".Jean Joachim Bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16614059778826802446noreply@blogger.com
